Why American Hotels Are Better Than European Hotels

There is great debate between travellers about the standards of hotels around the world. The debate is centred round whether European hotels offer the same value and level of accommodation as North America and Asia.
Now different people have different tastes when it comes to staying in a hotel or any type of accommodation away from home. Some people want everything to be like it is at home. Others value the cultural differences and expect accommodation to be different in other countries. And it also depends on what type of holiday experience you have in mind. The type of accommodation in a ski resort will be different to a beach front hotel in Waikiki. If you are on a European coach tour visiting several cities over a week you will encounter many hotels that are “pit stops” for the night. These hotels have been selected to fit in with the tour schedule and price. And there is nothing wrong with that as you are only “checked in” for the night and leave early the next morning.
However, if you are staying in a hotel for several days or longer you want to make sure you have selected a hotel that meets your requirements of location, accessibility, spaciousness, standard, quality and price. Every city around the world has good hotels and poor quality hotels so it is dangerous to generalise about the quality of accommodation across a continent.
Generally, people who have travelled the world agree that the standard of European hotels is not comparable to North America and Asia. Let’s compare.
American Hotels
Generally American hotels are larger hotels and part of a hotel chain whereas many European hotels are smaller family run hotels. Of course there are the large hotel chains in Europe, more hotels are becoming part of chains and new hotels are built.

American hotels have larger room sizes than comparable European hotels for the same or less money. There are often additional facilities like two queen beds, large bathrooms, kitchenettes and air conditioning. Price is one of the biggest differences between hotels on each side of the Atlantic. Some American cities, such as Las Vegas, have incredibly high standard hotels at very cheap rates. Now these hotels do make most of their money from the casino you have to navigate through before you get to your room. And that’s the trick, getting to your room with your wallet remaining in good health.
Another point that many world travellers say is that the restaurant meals in American hotels are larger and better value than in Europe. The quality of the food may vary but I would tend to agree with that too.
Asian Hotels
The main advantage with Asian hotels is that they are considerably less expensive than both American and European hotels for a comparable property. Even backpackers can afford to stay in good hotels in Asia whereas in Europe they are confined to sharing a dorm room with many other travellers.
Asian hotels tend to give much better value than their European equivalent. The average hotel size in Asia is relatively larger with many rooms. The room sizes are larger, bathrooms larger and newer. The facilities like pools and restaurants are usually better. World travellers have indicated they love to holiday in Asia because they can afford to stay in a hotel on the beach or one block from the beach. Dining out every night is inexpensive and makes a vacation more fun.
European Hotels
Unless you book a relatively expensive hotel, 4 or 5 star the standards are less than North America and Asia.
Many hotels in Europe are smaller, family run hotels. Many people find this type of accommodation has more charm and offers local hospitality over a large and sometimes impersonal hotel.
There have been many complaints about European hotels. Some people often complain about the small bathrooms with poor ventilation. Others complain about the poor linen, like in Italy where they give you those very thin towels that are like a small sheet. Others complain about the lack of views from the windows.
What Europe does have is the history and old world charm. Considering that when you are on holiday in Europe you won’t be spending much time in your hotel room – does it matter?
Well, yes it does matter. You have paid for a hotel room and you don’t want to have your European vacation spoilt by poor quality hotels where you don’t feel comfortable.
In many European cities, visitors are recommended to stay in a hotel outside the city centre and commute to the tourist attractions. These hotels tend to be newer, larger and comparable to hotels in the USA and Asia. This is not a problem in most European cities as their public transport infrastructure is very good with wide coverage and easy access to most parts of the city.
For those who are travelling to Australia, the hotel standards are similar to North America.

Everyday Old Havana becomes more and more one of the most sought-after locations where visitors to Cuba and Havana wish to book their hotel. It is not dificult to understand why. Old Havana is without doubt the most interesting part of the city of Havana, not only for its history and places but also for the great work in restoration that has been constantly taking place in the area by the Office of the Historian of the City for several years now.
Most of its hotels are very small hotels. This is why it is highly recommended to plan and book ahead if you plan to stay in this part of the city and accommodate in one of its historic hotels of great architecture. It is not rare to see these hotels overbooked 2 – 3 months ahead in time, specially in the high travelling season which takes place in the cuban winter in the last and first months of every year.
Here are some hotels we would like to mention that we think should be evaluated to make a choice for your accommodation when visiting Havana.
HOTEL TEJADILLO:
Hotel Tejadillo in old Havana counts with a great location facing the Cathedral Square, just around the corner from the famous Bodeguita del Medio. The hotel Tejadillo also has its very own history as it is formed by 3 houses built back in the 18th and 19th centuries. Tejadillo hotel has a 4/5 average review from tarvellers in tripadvisor.
HOTEL SANTA ISABEL:
With a great location on Plaza de Armas and at the beginning of Obispo – the pedestrianised shopping street in Old Havana – the Santa Isabel hotel has a lovely roof terrace with views towards the ocean. This hotel used to be the mansion of the count of Santovenia and became a hotel in 1867 favored by the ship-owners, tradersand artists in Havana.
HOTEL SAN FELIPE Y SANTIAGO DE BEJUCAL:
This is one of the newest cuba hotels that just opened its doors around October of 2010. It is in the very well known square of Plaza de San Francisco de Asus in old Havana. It is spacious, modern and comforttable. Opening has been a success so far with some very good comments and reviews about the hotle staff. Its full name is hotel Palacio del Marques de San Felipe y Santiago de Bejucal and it is an antique colonial palace. This hotel can be recommended wihtout hessitation.
HOTEL PALACIO SAN MIGUEL:
Recently refurbished with good tact and respect to the buildings original look, the Hostal Palacio San Miguel features nice , clean, high ceilinged rooms with magnificent views of the castles and fortresses just across the harbour. Furnishings are beautiful and compared with those seen in many of the neighbouring museums. A singular touch is added by the presence in every room and hall of the property of original vintage pictures, from the private collection of the San Miguel hotel, that bring the events and personages of days gone by to our time.
HOTEL FLORIDA:
Old fanshioned and colonial styled, the Florida hotels shows real character and has a location that is second to none with easy walking distance to all sites in old Havana. Rooms are basic yet nice and spacious. Its central location in one of the busiest streets of Old Havan can also be noisy although ideal for sightseeing.
HOTEL PALACIO DE O’FARRILL:
One of the advantages of the Palacio de O’Farril hotel is that taxs can drive right to its main door. This may sound strange but some hotels in old Havana are located in streets where no traffic is allowed so taxis drop you of at a waliking distance. Each hotel floor is dedicated to a century, with the 19th century floor being a favorite among many.
HOTEL LOS FRAILES:
Los Frailes is a highly original theme hostel. A lovely old monastery converted into a comfortable accommodation that welcomes you with munk statues and costumed staff at its main entrance. Chamber music is played at set times throughout the day. Hotel Los Frailes is comfortable, nicely decorated and with a lot of character. Staff is well known for being helpful and friendly, as well as for spekaing English quite well.
HOTEL ARMADORES DE SANTANDER:
Charming, quaint, comfortable and nice looking hotel close to the port and the large craft market of Old Havana. Its location, good for some and not so good for other due to the noise that can disturb your quite stay, puts you at the feet of the harbour and close to the action. The Armadores de Santander hotel is another rescued jewel of the Old Havana, opened in 2002 after a complete restoration that returned the building to its former glory as a hotel.
HOTEL PARKVIEW:
Adequate and clean, the Parkview hotel is a basic 3 star accommodation option with a great location near both the heart of the historic center of Old Havana and central Havana.Breakfast is served on the top floor with fantastic views of Havana.

You’re coming to Cape Town – which some of us in the Southern Hemisphere would say is the most beautiful, efficient and sophisticated city in Africa. Your choice of accomodation in Cape Town will play an important part of your experience of this lovely city.
Things to look for in good quality accomodation in Cape Town are clean and modern furnishings, privacy and a good location.
Green Point has not always been popular with tourists as an area with regards to accomodation in Cape Town.
This area which is located on the western border of Cape Town city and close to the Waterfront is continously being upgraded.
The 2010 Soccer World Cup will be hosted at the Green Point stadium which is currently in it’s completion stages and has helped invigorate this increasingly fashionable area.
Not so very long ago this Cape Town city precinct was the kind of place that offered you few reasons to visit it.
A visit to the Traffic Department (which is still located here) to settle parking fines did not endear Green Point to people.
If you were feeling a little gay or a lot gay then The Bronx bar was a reliable meeting place for gentlefolk.
And ladies would also be readily available on street corners down the main road of Green Point.
All these factors made Green Point quite an unsavoury place – at least for tourists when choosing accomodation in Cape Town.
As a result of recent changes Green Point has become more slick and modernised while retaining its character.
Lots of new modern well located apartments in Green Point means there is a much better choice of accomodation in Cape Town.
The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Development is the very affluent neighbour of Green Point.
There is no more room for expansion in the Waterfront Marina where the exclusive location and setting has resulted in a high demand for this type of accomodation in Cape Town.
This has resulted in a similiar quality of development in Greenpoint which lies on the V&A Waterfront’s southern boundary.
And so the Green Point stretch alongside this has responded with a swathe of glossy and modern apartment blocks and luxury all-suite hotels. Apartments in the Greenpoint area have become popular accomodation in Cape Town as a result of its excellent location.
These are excellent choices for accomodation in Cape Town as they offer better value than the Waterfront Marina by being on the outer edge of the Waterfront perimeter yet having fast direct access to all the Waterfront attractions.
And of course the security-conscious and high-tech V and A Waterfront lacks the aura of street-cred evident in Green Point.
Trendy shopping centres, good restaurants, lounge bars and coffee shops pepper the sidewalks and add to the unpretentious groove of Green Point.

The accommodation Lombok, Indonesia, offers visitors to its shores can vary greatly from location to location on the Island. It is wise therefore, that before you make travel plans or make an internet booking for a Lombok or Senggigi hotel, you discover exactly what you can expect.
For visitors to the island looking for surfing or eco tourism, the Kuta area (not to be confused with Kuta Bali) is a favourite destination.
With pristine beaches and a reputation for great surf breaks, Kuta is certainly a draw card for many people. People who do visit Kuta though should be prepared for a more traditional and rural accommodation experience.
Equally, the Gili Islands to the North West of Lombok offer a multitude of diving and fishing opportunities. However, it should be noted that until very recently, the Gilis were regarded as a backpackers haven, favoured by the younger set more willing to rough it. These days though, things are changing, with several developments including private villa rentals now available to visitors to the area.
For the majority of western visitors to the Island however, the Senggigi Beach area on the western side of Lombok has become the most popular place to holiday. This area has seen several western luxury resort style properties springing up, offering comfort, great service and a great base to return to after a day full of island activities.
Visitors considering staying in the Senggigi Beach area though should still do their homework as scattered in amongst the luxury accommodation options are still some more basic places to stay.
Essentially, it pays to:
1. Check holiday feedback sites such as Trip Advisor for comments and reviews about your intended hotel
2. Always check that there is English speaking staff available
3. Be aware that the Indonesian government collects taxes on top of the accommodation room rate and that this amount is usually added to the advertised room rate on Hotel websites unless otherwise notified
4. Check in advance if the hotel caters for the needs of children if you are traveling as a family group
5. Check that the hotel does airport transfers from the Lombok airport ( not all include this in the room rate)
6. Enquire if the menu of the hotel or resort serves western food, as spicy Lombok meals do not always agree with all palates
Essentially, Lombok accommodation has come a long way over the last few years, especially in the Senggigi Beach area, and with Lombok being regarded by many as the Bali of 25 years ago, it grows more popular as a tourist destination every year.
