The basic principles of Managing a Hotel are simple and similar, no matter what the Star classification of the Hotel is (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Star Hotel (Based on the Services and Facilities they provide), or if itâs a large or a small Hotel or if the hotel is operated independently (Managing the Hotel under your (Hotel Owners) Name) or part of a Hotel Chain (Managing Hotel under someone else name and paying them fees for using their name).
The bigger the Hotel gets, in terms of the number of Rooms and the number of Restaurants and Bars, the number of Staff increase and also the number of Titles and Positions of the Staff working there.
The primary and basic Business of any Hotel or a Resort is providing Rooms, Food and Drink to Guests (Customers).
They are classified as City Hotels (which mainly cater for Business Guest), Resorts (which cater for Guests on Holiday or on Vacation in Holiday and Beach Side Destinations), Airport Hotels (which are close to Airports and mostly cater to transit Airline Passengers and Airline Crew), Casino Hotels (Hotels which have licensed Gambling facilities), Convention Hotels (which have Convention and Meeting facilities for large number of Guests), Motels (Mainly in the US, which cater to Guests Traveling by road and who wish to stop over for overnight) , Bed and Breakfast (Mainly in Europe, which are small Hotels catering for Guest at reasonable pricing).
Letting out Guest Rooms, Letting out Conference Rooms for Meetings and Conferences, Letting out Ballrooms for Weddings and Functions and Sale and Service of Food and Drink in Restaurants and Bars are the primary source of Revenue on which Hotels rely.
As time passed by Hotels started generating Revenues from Spa (Providing Massage and Treatment Services) ,Health Club (Gym), Boutiques in the Hotel Lobby, Golf, Outside Catering, Serving Airlines through Flight Catering etc.
The primary Operational Departments of a Hotel are Front Office Department, House Keeping Department, Food and Beverage Service Department, Food Production Department (Kitchen).
Front Office and House Keeping Departments together are also known as Rooms Division Department.
Front Office Department deals with Guests Reservations: for Guests who want to stay in the Hotel , it also deals with Guest Registration when Guest check in to the Hotel, through dealing with Guest requests and Complaints during a Guest stay in the Hotel to finally collecting and processing Guest Payments, when Guest Finally check out of the Hotel.
In smaller Hotels Front Office Department is simply known as Reception.
Receptionists, Guest Service Agents, Cashiers and Front Office Manager form part of this Department.
Second Operational Department which is closely related to Front Office Department is House Keeping Department, which deals with the cleaning of Guest Rooms and Public Areas (Restaurants, Bars, Conference Halls, Ball Rooms and Offices etc).
In medium sized to big Hotels House Keeping Department also has an on premises Laundry for the washing of Guest Room Linen (Bed Sheets, Towels, Pillow Cases etc), Guest Clothes (for an extra Fee) and Staff Uniforms. In smaller Hotels this function is normally outsourced.
In smaller Hotels itâs simply known as Maid Service.
Room Maids, Housemen, Laundry Supervisor and Executive House Keeper form part of this Department.
Third Operational Department is Food and Beverage Service Department, which is a collection of all Restaurants, Bars, Conference halls and Ball rooms in the Hotel. It also includes Room Service.
Waiters, Bartenders, Restaurant Manager, Bar Manager, Room Service Manager, Banquet Manager and Food and Beverage Manager form part of this Department.
This Department deals with the Service of Food and Drink to the Guest and later for the collection of Payment from Guest.
Fourth Operational Department in a Hotel is Food Production Department or Kitchen. They cook Food for the Guests in the Restaurant, Bar, Room Service, Conferences, Functions and Weddings.
Cooks, Kitchen Stewards, Commis, Chef de Parties and Executive Chef form part of this Department.
Other than the four main operational departments mentioned above there are small ancillary departments which help in the proper functioning of a Hotel.
They are:
Accounts Department: Deals with the Money of the Hotel: all the Receipts and Payments of Money .Check if everything is accounted for and there is no pilferage (Stealing). Pays Salaries to Staff, Payments to Suppliers and deals with Books of Accounts for Taxation purpose. They also make regular reports for Owners and Managers, to give them the correct financial picture (if the Hotel is making Profit or Loss).
Human Resources or Personnel Department: This Department Recruits or Hires new staff deals with Employee Disciplinary Procedures, Employee Reward and Recognition Systems, Staff Attendance, Staff Holidays and Leave, Hiring, Firing, Promotions, Demotions and Transfers of Staff.
They also deal with Employee Benefits like Social Security, Employee Insurance, Health and Safety of Staff and matters related to Staff Pay.
Training Department: This Department is part of Human Resources Department, deals mainly with Staff Training.
Sales and Marketing Department: deals with promoting the Hotel and its Restaurants and Bars to increase the Room Occupancy and Sales and to also increase sales of Restaurants, Bars, Functions and Conferences.
They also take care of Advertising, Promotions and Public Relations of the Hotel.
Engineering and Maintenance Department: deals with the proper maintenance of Hotel Building and Equipment, lighting, Air Conditioning, Hot and Cold Water in Rooms and Restaurants, Plumbing, Painting, Carpentry Repairs etc.
Purchase Department: deals with the Purchase of Goods and Items (Food, Drink, Stationery and Equipment etc), required for the proper functioning of a Hotel.
Store Department: deals with the Receiving, Storage and Issuing of Goods and Items (Food, Drink, Stationary and Equipment etc) to various Departments in the Hotel.
Security Department: deals with the Security of Staff, Guests and the Hotel Property.
They are also responsible for the Fire Safety.
Finally, there is the IT (Information Technology) Guy, who takes care of the Computers and the Networking Systems in the Hotel, Hotel Website, Emails and Printers etc
Every Department can function on its own with a Department Head/Supervisor. But, to give proper Guest Service, Maintain Standards and to Increase Hotel Revenue you need a coordinator who can coordinate, guide and control all the Departments in the Hotel.
That is when the Hotel Manager/ General Manager come in, to coordinate the Functions of all the Departments and take the Hotel in the right direction.
So in a nutshell, Managing Hotel is all about keeping the Guest happy by providing him good product (Room, Food and Drink) and service and thus ensuring his/her return which will ultimately lead to the profitability of the Hotel and its Owners.

The Specifics of Hotel Management
Resident or hotel managers are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the property. In larger properties, more than one of these managers may assist the general manager, frequently dividing responsibilities between the food and beverage operations and the rooms or lodging services. At least one manager, either the general manager or a hotel manager, is on call 24 hours a day to resolve problems or emergencies.
Assistant managers help run the day-to-day operations of the hotel.

Travel Delay Fears at Spanish Airports
Travel Delay Fears at Spanish Airports
Spanish police are now threatening to bring airports and border crossings to a standstill by working strictly to rule in a protest over pay. The Policia Nacional are responsible for immigration checks at all Spanish airports, except those in Catalonia. Though they’re banned from striking, the disgruntled officers say they’ll cause huge delays by scrupulously checking the details of all persons entering or leaving the country and cross-referencing visitors’ passport details with international databases.
The protests are due to take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout July. If you are returning from Spain in July, then do get to your airport early enough to check in. If you miss your flight because of industrial action, then do try and get written confirmation from the airport or airline to substantiate the reason for the disruption in case a travel insurance claim is necessary.
Likewise, if your airline delays flights because of this ‘work to rule’ then do keep receipts of any expenses you are forced to make as a result of the delay and approach your airline for compensation for meals, refreshments and accommodation. If your flight is cancelled, ask your airline for a refund or an alternative flight. Missed departure and travel delay are key components of most travel insurance policies but do shop around before buying and do check the terms and conditions to ensure there are no exclusions that could affect you.
Travel insurance is there to assist when it goes wrong so it makes sense to have some cover in place whenever you travel. This article is brought to you by travelandinsure.com – specialist in ethical travel insurance.

Top Five Cheap Flight Destinations
Top Five Cheap Flight Destinations
At the moment, it’s easy to see how some people would be worried about vacation costs this year. Travel is too expensive for many people because of the economy and threats of layoffs. However, there are still cheap travel destinations if you are willing to do your homework. The bulk of your vacation cost will probably go towards your flight and your hotel stay. So, finding a cheap flight and taking advantage of other options can greatly reduce the cost of your vacation. Here are the top five cheap flight destinations that you should consider:
New York City and Other Big Cities
You can often find cheap flights to New York City and other big cities because they are home to large airports. When you fly into a large airport, you have more airline options, which can lower the price. Big cities can be a lot of fun, but are not usually high on the list for tourist destinations, since people are more likely to want to head to the beach or mountains for vacation. As an added bonus, that means that other activities in the cities are also less expensive. Most big cities even have government-sponsored museums, parks, and zoos which are free or under for admission.
Florida or Southern California
The price of your flight often depends on your point of origin. One thing that is almost always a sure bet, though, is that it will typically be cheaper to stay in the United States than to travel abroad. If you live in the eastern half of the country, Florida is a natural choice. You can find flights into Orlando and Miami for just 0 to 0 if you are leaving from a larger northern airport. In the west, southern California is a great destination for the same reason. If you live in the center of the United States, check both Florida and California prices. Also, don’t forget that visiting the gulf of Texas is also an option.
Canada
If you absolutely just want to experience a different country, Canada is a great option. Staying near the United States and not having to cross an ocean helps keep the price of the flight down as low as possible. Canada is also not a huge tourism center, so prices for flights are naturally lower than, for example, Hawaii. Keep in mind that travelling can still get pricey once you arrive at your destination with the current exchange rate, so budget accordingly. However, with the money you’ll save on a flight, it could be worth it. You won’t find warm, sunny beaches in Canada, but you will find some great wilderness resorts, and there are a number of cities that are fun to visit, such as Toronto.
The Caribbean
Believe it or not, the prices for plane tickets to the Caribbean are actually fairly affordable. Although this is a tourist hotspot, the sheer number of flights going into and out of these airports drives the price down. When you work with your travel agent, you can also often get a lower price because they get discounts for selling a certain number of flights on one airline – and flights are easy to book to the Caribbean. There aren’t as many tourists flying to, for example, Italy on the other hand, so they aren’t likely to get a discount on that airline. You can save even more money in general by choosing to fly to Puerto Rico, since it is still a territory of the United States.
Mexico
Some vacationers have been shying away from Mexico recently. However, if you stick to tourist hot spots and use a little discretion, you can be very safe in this country. Flights into Mexico are inexpensive for the same reasons that flights into Canada are inexpensive, you are staying near the United States and you don’t have to cross an ocean. You’ll still pay more for a flight to Mexico than most domestic flights, but if you shop around for good deals, you should be able to travel fairly inexpensively.
Flying will always be expensive, no matter how much price comparison you do to different destinations. There are a few things you can do to keep the price as low as possible, wherever your destination may be. First, be flexible with your dates. Flights are usually more expensive on weekend and near holidays. You can also add more layovers to your flight or take nighttime flights to save money. Finally, when you book your flight, try not to plan activities that you have to rush to as soon as you land. That way, if there is an overbooking problem, you can volunteer to take a later flight. If you do that, most airlines will refund your ticket and give you an additional free flight to use in the future.

Air Travel: Why You Should Research Airlines And How To Do So
Air Travel: Why You Should Research Airlines And How To Do So
Air Travel:Â Why You Should Research Airlines and How to Do So
Â
No matter when or why you need to book an airline flight, youâre going to need to know just what your options are. Whether youâre flying to a vacation destination, a business meeting, a family gathering, or to move to a new city doesnât really matter. What does matter is finding the flight which will get you to your destination as safely, cheaply, and quickly as possible. You may, however, feel somewhat overwhelmed when you realize how many airlines promise to do exactly that.
Â
How can you sort through the different airlines, different departure and arrival times, and different fares to find the flight which is really the best option for you? Youâll have to set your priorities. For many of us our choice of flights is dictated by either their departure or arrival time, because we rely on other people to get us to or pick us up at the airports. For a nervous flier, however, the most important detail may be to find the shortest possible flight. A nervous flier may also be concerned about a certain airlineâs safety record. For many people, however, flight choices are simply a matter of economy, and the lowest fare will win
Â
If youâre in the unique position of finding several airlines with flights which meet all your specification, then itâs time to put your research skills to work. Adequately researching your airline is the first step to ensuring that your flight is merely the delightful opening act of a great trip. Research is especially important it youâll be flying with your kids, because traveling with small children can require a good deal of flexibility and a flight crew with extra patience.
Â
Find out which of the airlines on your list of possible have reputations as family-friendly carriers. How well prepared are they for assisting the elderly or disabled? Flying is stressful enough without your having to deal with a flight crew who regards you and your family as problems instead of as valued customers!
Â
Begin your research by asking your relatives and acquaintances about their experiences with different airlines. Did they have problems with their baggage or seating? If their flights were delayed, were the reasons explained? If they missed connecting flights because of those delays, did the airline provide them with other connections or with overnight accommodations if necessary? How did the crew get along with the kids on their flights? Most importantly, would they fly the same airline again?
Â
You can also turn to the Internet in your search for information. There are plenty of travel sites where the public is free to post their travel stories, and youâll have no trouble finding their complaints and compliments regarding different air carriers. You can also check travel and consumer review magazines for their airline ratings. They are great places to get unbiased opinions on the pluses and minuses of traveling with different airlines.
Â
Review consumer reporting agencies for complaints if you have doubts about a specific airline. Simply run a Google search with the keyword complaint and the name of the airline and youâll find links to whatever is out there.
Â
Thereâs no reason why you should grab a ticket on the first airline you find which has service to your destination. Youâve put lots of thought into your trip, and you deserve to put the same among of thought into the sort of experience youâll have on the flight which gets you where youâre going and returns you home again!

Air Travel Tips For Making It Easy And Smooth
Air Travel Tips For Making It Easy And Smooth
Observing fellow passengers on my recent flight, I noticed several mistakes and evidence of poor planning that caused the travelers unnecessary distress.
Traveling by airplane and through airports is stressful enough as it is. Why not do everything you can to make it easy on yourself?
Here are seven simple suggestions of what you can do to make your next flight more comfortable and pleasant.
1. Set your intention. Sounds weird, but it works. Arrive at the airport with the mindset that all is going to go smoothly and that you are going to meet helpful people. Pleasing conditions are much more likely to occur if you expect them than if you are expecting hassles.
2. Wear slip-on shoes. Face it, getting through security these days involves partially undressing in front of a lot of strangers who just want you to hurry up and get out of the way. You always have to take off your shoes, so make it easy on yourself by wearing slides.
3. Use a carryon with wheels. Think of it as your airport supply kit. Even if you are checking luggage, you still want to have a small wheeled carryon bag, and here’s why: carrying the odds and ends in a bag over your shoulder is tiring and limits your freedom of movement. Instead, a wheeled carryon can act as a sort of cart for any additional items you pick up along the way: food, water, magazines, etc.
4. Bring food. Buy it at the airport if that’s easiest, but be sure to bring healthier choices than offered by the snack boxes you can buy on the airplane — unless you like snacks virtually absent of nutrition and high in fat and carbs.
5. Hydrate. You will feel so much better if you drink plenty of water. The air on the planes is very dry, and since the cabin is a contained, pressurized environment, the air is recycled during the flight. You’re breathing in a lot of crud, and water helps your body deal with it.
6. Wear noise-canceling headphones in flight. What more can I say? Wow. They are totally worth the investment if you fly very often at all. Planes are extremely noisy. The powerful engines, the crying babies, the talkative neighbors. All of the grinding and rumbling and whining and blasting become mere background whispers when you’re wearing noise canceling headphones.
7. Bring disposable entertainment. During flight and on layovers, there are a multitude of things you can do to pass the time, ranging from working on your laptop to filling in the newspaper crossword puzzle. But you need a pen to do the puzzle, a plug-in to work on the laptop for long, a credit card to sit in a lounge and watch TV… you get the idea. Think ahead about what entertainment you might like to have on hand that is portable and convenient to interrupt during the many phases of your passage from one location to the next. Easiest is a magazine because if you space out and leave it behind, it is readily replaced.
When you have these seven suggestions in place and you keep your overall airport supply kit (the handy wheeled carryon) lightly but thoroughly equipped, your air travel experience becomes more manageable and effortless.

Air Travel Tips – Flights in India
Air Travel Tips – Flights in India
For anyone who has not gone on a flight before, his or her first time through the airport can be a puzzling and taxing experience. There are inflexible rules to follow, queues to stand in, and loads of people to move around. If this is the first time flying, some essential air travel tips will make the experience safer, less demanding and will help a person to get from his home to his destination without a problem.
Reach there early:
One of the most imperative air travel tips, the one that will help a person to make up for any other problems along the way, is to reach the airport before time. Most airports do not let a person get a boarding pass unless he turns up at least 30 minutes prior to his flight. He has to go through the security checkpoint. Most people who fly propose arriving at least two hours earlier to the flight’s departure time. No one wants to get jammed in the middle of the security line when his plane leaves the gate.
Pack Light:
Though every person’s definition of packing light is personal, this is another one of the air travel tips that will make flying experience comfortable. Rather than try to handle the largest carry-on bag one should pack a small bag with a book, some magazines, or whatever one will need through his flight, and pack a second bag that with which one can check. If your bag is small, then you can comfortably fit it under the seat in your front, which makes you getting on and off the flight easier.
Eat Before the Airport:
In this set of tips for air travel; this is one that your wallet will be glad about the most: one should eat before he goes to the airport. Many airports have a superb variety of businesses in their terminals so one can grab a bite to eat while waiting for his flight. However, mostly it has fast foods, which are spicy, greasy and expensive too.
Relax
Of course, above all other air travel tips, is the suggestion that one should relax when flying. All the issues which one has to face at the airport, the check-in process, the long security lines, and so on, add up to a flying experience that is reliable than ever before. Airline employees and airport staff do everything they can to take the anxiety out of a rather busy experience, so be rest assured that accidents will be diminished.

It also shows future options for directing air traffic into and out of airports that are more customized to aircraft trajectories.

Discount International Air Travel Is Not For Everyone
Discount International Air Travel Is Not For Everyone
Traveling internationally means something different to all of us. Some will be going on a holiday while others may be traveling for business purposes for example. Either way many people will choose the option for discount international air travel. Of course this really does depend on your financial situation and whether or not you are happy to accept the compromises that go with this form of traveling. What I mean by this is that to keep airfares at discounted prices the airlines will offer you for example alternatives such as layovers instead of direct flights. Now this may not be a bother to some people but to others it can be very disruptive to their travel plans.
I would seriously suggest to you that before you purchase your discount international air travel tickets you should really do your homework and find out whether these compromises are worth the reduced prices. For instance if you are flying with young children, you may wish to get to your destination as quickly as possible (for the sanity of all) without the hassle of stopping over at airports for hours waiting to catch the connecting flight. Children do not cope terribly well with long delays in airports. They can become quite irritable and understandably so.
Some discount international air travel options also can mean that you may not be landing at the nearest airport to where you want to go to, meaning you will have to find alternative transport to get you to your final destination. This may become quite costly. So when you add it all up it may have been much better to go for a more expensive flight. This is why I stress that you do your homework first.
Some airlines may also cut back on the extras that you get during your onboard flight. This may mean less to eat and drink. They may offer you snacks to buy which can be expensive too. Again, this may not bother some while it will bother others. Make sure when you are purchasing your tickets either through the airline or the travel agency that you ask lots of questions to make sure that you will be happy with the flight. After all whether you are flying full price or discounted it is still a lot of money to be spending when you fly internationally.
I suppose the good thing these days though is that there really is the option in the first place to be able to acquire discount international air travel. This opens up the world to so many people who probably would never have been able to afford to go overseas before but now can. So, save your money, do your homework and enjoy your time away from home for whatever reason it is that you are.

My journey to Hong Kong from Manila via Incheon on board Korean Air B777-300 and B747-400E. Yup, it’s a long route alright. More than 7 hours trip compared to a 2 hour direct flight from Manila. It’s on business class anyway; I didn’t mind. Some shots are a bit shaky. Took it with a Nokia N70. Features take offs and landings, Korean Air flight attendants, and the bibimbap!

Volcanic Eruption Causes Air Travel Disruption
The massive volcanic eruption in Iceland is being felt here in Canada by air travellers. If you are planning on flying to many European destinations from Vancouver, or waiting for loved ones to arrive, you may be out of luck. At YVR, several flights have been cancelled. It’s the same scene being played out at airports around the world.
