Tips for Finding a Knowledgeable Travel Agent

Tips for Finding a Knowledgeable Travel Agent

In the travel industry, the more knowledgeable your travel agent, the better your vacation will be. Knowledgeable travel agents know tips and tricks for making the most of your destination, such as how to get the most exclusive tickets to activities and events, when to travel for the best weather, and best of all, how to save the most money on your vacation. If you are interested in booking a vacation, work with a travel agent who knows the ropes. Though, how do you find the most knowledgeable travel agent out there? Here are some tips for choosing your agent:

Tip #1: Look at past experience.

Someone who has spent ten or more years in any industry is usually more knowledgeable than someone who has only been in the industry for just a few months. There’s something to be said about working with a travel agent who has a fresh approach to vacations, and age is not always a good indication of knowledge, but this is a start.

More so than time in the travel industry, however, you want to look at the volume of work that they do. Some travel agents only book a few trips every year. Others work with dozens or even hundreds of travelers every year. So, as far as “experience” goes, look at both time in the industry and number of trips they’ve booked.

Tip #2: Work with someone who has booked trips to your destination in the past.

Most travel agents have booked trips to Disney World and Hawaii, but what about somewhere more obscure? Travel agents can schedule trips to anywhere you’d like to go, but that does not mean that they are knowledgeable about the area. If you want to take a ski vacation to somewhere in the Eastern United States, for example, it is not enough that your travel agent has booked trips to the Rockies. Before hiring a travel agent, find out where they have had success booking vacations in the past. For the best experience, work with an agent who has actually traveled to this destination as well.

Tip #3: “Interview” your travel agent.

When you first talk to a travel agent about your trip, don’t let them begin booking your trip right away. It’s really easy, and not uncommon, to just stop by an office wanting some information and leave with a signed contract in hand. Remember, though, when you talk to a travel agent for the first time, you are essentially interviewing them for the job.

As part of your initial meeting, you should talk about the travel agent’s experience, understanding of the location, commission rate, and more. Do not be afraid to ask questions to find out if your travel agent really is knowledgeable about the trip you want to take.

Tip #4: Get recommendations from your friends and family members.

While it is important to get recommendations, you can’t always believe what you read or hear. That is why you should stick to travel agents who are recommended by your friends and family members. It is really easy for some travel agencies to pay for good testimonials, but that does not mean that they are actually knowledgeable about your destination.

When talking to your friends and family members about travel agents that they have used, remember to take their compliments and criticisms with a grain of salt. What are these travelers like? If your cousin Jane likes to plan out every last detail herself, her travel agent might not have done more than booking the flight and hotel stay. If your roommate is hard to please, her “terrible” vacation was probably not all that bad.

Tip #5: Test their knowledge.

Lastly, do your own research so that you can test your travel agent’s knowledge. You should not be trying to trick them, but let’s face it, when you are ready to sign that check, no travel agent is going to come out and tell you that they don’t know anything about vacations to China or cruises to Alaska. Travel agents are good at talking their way through situations, so test them out to see how much they really know.

For example, you might do some research to learn about the airport options when you want to visit Southern California. Ask your travel agent about the choices. If he or she quickly says that LAX is the only airport in the area, even though your own research shows that there is another option, that’s not a good sign! Travel agents can’t know everything, but instead of feeding you information that is incorrect or incomplete for the sake of seeming like they are an expert, they should tell you that they are not sure and offer to find out for you. The most knowledgeable travel agents are always willing to keep learning.

How Best to Promote Your Travel Site ( Or Any Other )

How Best to Promote Your Travel Site ( Or Any Other )

One of the largest and fastest growing industries on the Internet is the travel industry. We live on a big, beautiful planet and many folks the world over now have the financial means to travel around and see much of it for themselves. For both business and pleasure people are traveling more than ever.

There are so many worthwhile places for travelers to go to that even with big players with deep pockets involved in the Internet travel market in a major way the small travel operator, travel writer, or travel related website webmaster of modest means still has a tremendous number of markets to work with and to develop into profitable nitches.

The travel market is always hungry for “been there, done that” well written articles that provide detailed information about a travelers experiences, travel tips, how to get there, and things to see and do at out of the way locations of merit.

There is also a huge market for articles and web sites that feature well known travel spots but that approach the subject matter in a unique fresh way.

There are a lot of niches in even well developed markets that the well informed travel writer can explore to advantage. Perhaps it’s the discovery of a new restaurant offering excellent meals at reasonable prices in the middle of a well known travel destination like New York City. Or perhaps the writer stays in a newly redecorated hotel in Thailand that offers superior service, tasty Thai meals, and clean rooms at all of – a night.

The personal experiences of the travel writer can compete very well with the big boys should that person wish to develop his/her own Internet travel service.

Of course, for any business to be successful it needs to be promoted. Even on the Internet advertising can become very expensive. The big dogs may be able to afford “branding” advertising and paying high bids for pay per click advertising but a small company or individual trying to develop a profitable Internet presence probably cannot.

So what is the best way to promote your Internet travel business or for that matter any Internet business without going crazy with SEO and high PPC charges?

As one who has worked full time on the Internet since 1998 and who has tried about everything to get more traffic to web pages I have a firm opinion. I can say without hestitation that it is by building high content web pages, writing articles related to the theme of your web pages, and then distributing the articles through services like Articlemarketer that provide links back to your website.

No kidding. The best most cost effective way is right in front of you.

I’ll save the reasons that article writing and distribution are so cost effective for my next article. Stay tuned.

How to Save Money When Booking a Vacation Through Your Travel Agency

How to Save Money When Booking a Vacation Through Your Travel Agency

With an uncertain economy and, for many, an uncertain future, some people are opting to put off vacations. Despite the potential problems on the horizon, that does not have to be the case. When you work with a travel agency, you can save a lot of money. Almost anyone can afford to travel if they follow these six tips when booking a vacation through a travel agency:

Tip #1: Be clear that you’re on a very tight budget.

If you want to save money when you vacation, your best bet is to tell your travel agent that from the start. There is little to be gained by hiding the fact that you want to travel on a shoestring budget. Furthermore, be really clear about what that budget is, since “inexpensive” to one person is not cheap to another. The clearer you are about your price range, the better. That way, your travel agent can put together a vacation package that you can afford, not work for a long time on something that doesn’t even come close to your budget.

Tip #2: Have flexible travel dates and times.

The more options you give your travel agent when it comes to your vacation dates, the better. Flights tend to change prices drastically over the weekend, so moving your vacation just two or three days could save you hundreds of dollars. Avoiding holidays is also good. When you’re flexible, your travel agent can also barter for hotel rooms, show tickets, and so forth with other companies in the travel industry. For example, if your travel agent knows that another agent is trying to fill rooms he or she bought in a chunk for a discounted price, you can get a better deal on one of those rooms. Give your travel agent a bit of wiggle room to negotiate. Likewise, if you are willing to travel at undesirable times, like in the early morning hours or overnight, you may be able to get a cheaper deal, at least on the transportation costs.

Tip #3: Ask for a cheaper version of your dream vacation.

During your initial meeting with your travel agent, have an open mind when it comes to destination. Talk about your dream vacation spot, but then hear out your agent on places that are similar but not as expensive. For example, say you want to visit Aspen for a gorgeous ski vacation. It might be less expensive (but just as fun) to go skiing at one of the resorts in Vermont. You might feel like your compromising too much, but think about your destination choices long and hard. If it is just the name holding you back, you might want to just let go and take a risk on the less expensive location. You might have just as much fun if you stay open-minded

Tip #4: Stay in the United States.

Work with a travel agent who books domestic trips so that you can stay in the United States. In most cases, you should save money on transportation since you will not have to travel as far. You may also be able to travel without documentation, as long as you have a picture ID. When you travel out of the country, you need a passport at the very least, and you may need a visa, certain vaccinations, or other travel documents as well. When you stay in the United States, you should also not have to worry about added cell phone expenses to make calls, losing money on the exchange rate, or paying top dollar to take your luggage with you.

Tip #5: Be willing to do some of the planning yourself.

The whole reason you use a travel agent is to avoid having to do the planning work yourself, but if you compromise on that a bit, you may be able to save money. Instead of working with a travel agent who plans every last detail, get someone that is a little less expensive and just book your flight and hotel through the agent. When it comes to the other stuff, like getting tickets to an event or making restaurant reservations, you can do the work yourself.

Tip #6: Organize a group tour.

A great way to save money on your vacation is to organize a tour through your travel agency. Group rates will apply, but more importantly, the person who organized the vacation typically gets to travel for free. The down side of that is that you have to commit to finding a certain number of people who will go on vacation with you, which can be hard. You are also responsible for them if they do not pay, and you have to, essentially, share you vacation. However, this is a great way to save money and make sure that you can still travel, even if you are on a budget.

Travel Cover Concerns

Travel Cover Concerns

Two thirds of British holidaymakers have admitted that they will now be spending less on their holidays due to the credit crunch. This has prompted the Foreign Office to voice concerns that people will opt out of getting comprehensive travel insurance, adding potential financial ruin to the trauma of experiencing a serious problem abroad . Currently, one in four Britons go on holiday without insurance and risk having to spend thousands in repatriation costs raising concerns that this figure will rise. As one travel industry observer has noted, “it’s a false economy to do without travel insurance and it should be regarded as a holiday essential. It’s just as important as packing your passport.” Travel insurance premiums vary greatly, as does the cover provided but, relative to the overall holiday costs, it really is a small amount to pay for the ‘peace of mind’ it gives. But do beware falling into the trap that seeking out the cheapest insurance deal is ok for all situations. The old adage that ‘you get what you pay for’ can also apply to low end insurance policies. You do need to check that what is being offered will provide you with the cover you need.

When looking for cheap travel insurance, there are some simple rules to apply. Do your homework. Firstly, know what you want. Are you looking for a policy to cover you for just one trip or if you are going to travel more than once, then why not consider an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy instead? That could save you money over the year. Then read the policy schedule. Most internet sites are good at giving an instant quote – that is what they are designed to do but fewer provide easily accessible information to indicate what the policy covers. At the very least, you should look at the policy schedule. This is the table that shows the level of cover against various risks. Choose a policy that satisfies your needs.

The areas that cost the most in a travel insurance policy tend to be cancellation, personal effects and medical cover. If you are booking long in advance, then cancellation cover is a must (normally around the £3000 figure is sufficient) as this safeguards you if you have to cancel because of, say, a close family illness or being called for jury service, to name but two examples. If however, you are taking a last minute holiday, then perhaps cancellation cover is not as necessary so you could reduce your premium considerably by choosing a policy with limited or no cancellation. Likewise, reducing your baggage cover can see your premiums nose dive. When it comes to medical cover, the FCO recommends a level of £2 million as being more than adequate, so perhaps you don’t need to buy the policy that offers £10 million. Next check the small print. Very few of us take the time to read the small print but the ‘devil is in the detail’ for sure. Ask yourself some key questions. Is where I want to travel covered by the policy, for example, is Egypt in Europe or Rest of the World as definitions do differ from company to company? Am I covered if caught up in a terrorist incident? Do I need to produce a police report if I have money or personal effects stolen? What about hazardous activities? Am I covered to bungee jump on my trip for instance? Make a list of simple questions relating to your trip and then check the policy.

So is there such a thing as cheap travel insurance? Most definitely there is but the simple rule of thumb is that the cheaper the policy, the more restrictive it is likely to be. But you can help yourself by knowing what to look out for and wherever possible tailoring your insurance to your exact needs and that way make your travel insurance cheaper.

Cheap Travel Resulting in Increased Holiday Travel

The availability of cheap airplane tickets, cheap auto rentals, and discount hotel rooms, is making experts forecast a jump in Memorial Day travel.  Over 32 million Americans are expected to travel over the upcoming holiday weekend, according to AAA (American Automobile Association).  This includes driving, flying and travel via train. This year’s estimate is for almost 2 million more people to be traveling.

Finding great travel deals is a higher priority among this year’s travelers.  According to an AAA study just released these visitors will be spending much less than last year.  The auto club projects that median spending on travel for Memorial Day weekend this year will come in at 9 vs. ,052 last year, a decrease of 23 percent. And this is with a large increase in gasoline costs.

Airline ticket prices for the holiday weekend will be virtually flat with last year, according to AAA.  Car rental rates for the weekend are projected to drop by 15 percent to an average of per day.  Hotel rates are forecasted to fall somewhat from last year.

More people are expected to travel by car, even though gasoline prices are almost 50 cents higher per gallon that they were last year.  Airlines will be flying more leisure travelers, with a modest projected increase of about 50,000 passengers.

The improving economy is a key factor in why AAA is expecting more people to be traveling this upcoming holiday weekend.  AAA travel agents are seeing double digit increases in the percent of people reserving tours, cruises, and hotels.
